Make It Five In A Row

Five in a row!  The Arab Lady Knights set a new tournament record Saturday night as they clinched the Marshall County girls basketball championship for an unprecedented fifth consecutive year.  The Lady Knights, currently ranked #3 in the state 5A girls basketball classification, continued their dominance of the county tournament by defeating the Boaz Lady Pirates by a score of 54-28.  The Knights won over the the Asbury Lady Rams (87-19) and the Douglas Lady Eagles ( 56-42) in tournament play on Tuesday and Thursday to advance to the Saturday night finals.  For the Lady Pirates it was their first time in five years to advance to the championship game.  The Lady Pirates upset DAR, the #3 ranked team in Class 4A, with a 37-35 victory in Thursday night’s tournament semifinals to move to the finals.

In addition to the championship title, the Knights placed four players on the All County tournament team.  Named to the team were Kathryn Whitlock, Kate Hadkova, Courtney Gibson and Alli Smalley.  Smalley was named the tournament Most Valuable Player for the third consecutive year.  Coach Steve Flack received the "Coach of the Year" award.

Arab led by a score of 18-12 at the end of first quarter play and went into the dressing room at half time leading 31-19.  The Knights began to pull away even more in the second half posting a 41-23 third quarter score and the final 54-28.

The Knights connected on 19 of 52 field goal attempts for an overall 36.5% shooting percentage while Boaz only hit 9 of 47 field goal shots with an overall 19.1% shot percentage.  Outside the three point circle Arab hit 3 of 7 attempts for a 42.9% percentage while Boaz was only able to sink 1 three pointer out of 11 attempts shooting a disappointing 9%.  Boaz was red hot from the free throw line making 9 of their 10 opportunities while Arab connected on 13 of 30 opportunities for a 43.3% free throw shooting percentage.

The Lady Knights dominated the boards by pulling in fifty total rebounds to the Lady Pirates thirty.  Arab posted a 62.5% rebounding percentage compared to a 37.5% rebound percentage for Boaz.

Kate Hadkova and Courtney Gibson led the Arab scoring with 12 points each.  Hadkova hit 5/12 field goal attempts and was 2/7 from the free throw line, had 2 assists and pulled in 5 rebounds.  Gibson made 3/6 field goal attempts, 4/8 free throw shots and 2/2 three point tosses with 2 assists and 4 rebounds.  Alli Smalley contributed 11 points, 4 assists and 10 rebounds.  Smalley connected on 4/15 field goal shots and 3/4 free throw shots.  Lindsey Guess tossed in 7 points and captured 5 rebounds.  Guess hit 2/7 field goal shots and 3/6 free throws.  Angela Henderson contributed 5 points and 2 rebounds while Kathryn Whitlock scored 4 points, hauled in 7 rebounds and had one assist. Anna Huckaby rounded out the scoring with 3 points , 1 rebound and 2 assists.

The Knights secured home court advantage in the opening round of regional play by defeating Fort Payne on January 19th.  Regional play is scheduled to begin February 5th.
