Severe Weather Early Warning Project
Will Benefit Those Most Vulnerable
May 7, 2008 -
Dwight Hayes
When
severe weather threatens, early warning is
critical to saving lives. One of the
most efficient means of delivering the
National Weather Service warnings and
statements is with a NOAA Weather Alert
Radio. Unfortunately many of those
most vulnerable to severe weather, can least
afford to purchase the radios. The
homebound, elderly, and low income
households are often the least prepared when
severe weather strikes. To help increase
awareness of the need for early warnings,
and to help provide free radios to those who
are unable to afford then, four
organizations are teaming up on May 16th to
raise funds for the purchase of weather
alert radios for those who qualify for
assistance.
United Way 2-1-1,
News Channel 19,
Council on Aging, and
Marshall County Emergency Management Agency
will be at all three Marshall County
Wal-Mart locations on Friday, May 16 from 5
a.m. to 6:30 p.m. taking monetary donations
for the purchase of radios and/or accepting
donated purchases of the radios.
Wal-Mart locations are Arab - Brindlee
Mountain Parkway, Guntersville - U.S. Hwy
431, Boaz - U.S. Hwy 431.
If you want to
purchase a radio for your own use but need
help programming the radio, EMA specialists
will also be on site to help program new or
currently owned radios.
For those unable
to stop by any of the Wal-Mart locations,
donations may be mailed to United Way, 705
Blount Ave, Guntersville, AL 35976.
Applications for assistance will be taken
May 16th. Applicants must provide
proof of income. Applicants will be
notified later if approved to receive a
radio.
