Responds To McLaughlin Statement
April 17,
2008
Sirs:
I surely
would like to expound upon Jeff McLaughlin’s statement in
our local papers concerning his opinion about the $25.00 tag
fee being the best solution for the Arab, Guntersville and
Marshall County school systems. (Source: Arab Tribune, April
9, 2008.) Who elected him to make a decision of what is best
for the taxpayers. I suppose I am naïve in believing the
people should continue to have the right to impose a tax on
them-selves, when it is shown to be needed. The solution to
this problem is to consolidate all the systems back into the
county system or prorate the sales tax revenue.
The tag bill will suck more money into a system that will
soon be destroyed by people like our self-appointed king
over his constituents. Representative McLaughlin cannot
support consolidation because he is controlled by the city
of Arab by being the city attorney and on their payroll.
(Source: The Arab Tribune. April 9, 2008.)
Senator Hinton Mitchem introduced a bill in the 2004
legislative session that would have utterly destroyed the
Marshall County System when he wanted to change the
jurisdiction or boundary lines or both of local school
systems. He did this under the guise of busing. (Source: The
Advertiser-Gleam. April 24, 2004.) Where is his loyalty to
our county children’s education?
We know from the number of times the citizens of Arab turned
down a property tax increase for their schools, they would
be against the tag bill. It took a state wide vote to make
Arab’s school tax rise because the city vote was against the
required minimum 10 mill by 49/51 percent. (Source: Arab
Tribune. Nov 11, 2008.)
I seriously doubt if any city system could operate on the
taxes generated within their boundaries without the benefit
of people outside the city being forced to make their
purchases in the city business places. All systems have to
be supported by sale tax revenue to operate.
I would suggest if you are in agreement with me, flood the
Marshall County Legislative office with phones calls. (256)
