Boaz – January 24, 2009 -
Special to Arab Today
They started playing basketball together
in Steve Hallman’s Arab rec. league program at the age of seven.
A few more started a year or two later. Saturday night they
reached a pinnacle and claimed a reward for ten years of work,
dedication, sacrifice - and let’s not forget a lot of fun along
the way. One point of consensus going into the 2009 Marshall
County tournament (VB) was that any of the contesting teams had
a chance to bring home the trophy. In the end, the Arab Knights
were left standing. Arab won the County tournament championship
game against the highly regarded Boaz Pirates by a score of 46 –
32 Saturday night in front of a near capacity coliseum at Snead
State Community College.
Celebration Time - Arab’s Wesley Hohn,
Jared Myers, Lee Elrod, Burnham Hawk and Joe Cagle have been
playing together for ten years. They reached a pinnacle
together.

Arab standout guard Jared Myers, who hit the
1000 career point mark Monday against Asbury, added 26 and led
scoring in tonight’s contest. Lake Graham added eight for the
Knights and Lee Elrod added five.
Caleb Brown led Boaz with 10 points. Mason Rogers added nine and
Collin Langley tossed in another six. Mason Rogers also finished
with 11 rebounds. Total rebounding in the contest was even at 25
for each team.
The game was tied 7 – 7 after one quarter of play. The Knights
had a six point lead at the half and continued to pull away in
the third quarter against the stubborn Pirates, who continued to
battle down to the end. The Knights’ defensive play turned back
Boaz attempts to cut into the lead, allowing Arab to continue to
stretch their lead in the third and fourth quarters.

Tough going vs. Boaz. Jared Myers (24) runs
into Colton Hunkapillar (34), Mason Rogers (30), and Drew
Phillips (14). Help on the way from Lake Graham (10)

Get ready for AKII.
The 2008 – 09 season’s not over by any means. There are three
more regular season games. The Arabian Knights will resume play
at home Tuesday night against DAR in the final home game of the
season. Seniors will be honored between the varsity girls and
varsity boys games. The Knights will then face Brewer and
Huntsville before proceeding into the 5A Area 14 tournament.
They’ll do so as a team hitting on all cylinders and peaking at
the right time of the year. It’s almost like starting another
season, this one leading straight to Birmingham. Stay tuned and
check back for Arabian Knight Championship Basketball II (AKII).
Knights and
fans ready to roll.
