The Arabian Knights came roaring back in 5A Area 14 play and
turned in one of their better performances of the season. The
Knights turned back the Fort Payne Wildcats by a score of 71 –
52.
The Arab gym was standing
room only. Prior to the varsity boys’ game, the City of Arab
took the occasion to honor former Arab basketball standout Alli
Smalley by retiring her jersey. By proclamation, Mayor Gary Beam
and the Arab city council also designated January 16 Alli
Smalley Day. Smalley is Arab’s all time leading scorer with
3,107 career points. She led the Lady Knights to state
championship games in 2006 and 2007 and is now an SEC standout
with the Auburn Tigers.

The night’s excitement
had only begun, however. The Knights and the Wildcats boys
played an extremely competitive and hard fought game that had
supporters on the edge of their seats. Arab won the night with
four players finishing in the double-digit scoring column. Jared
Myers had a big night, scoring 23 points with seven rebounds,
four assists, and two steals. Myers was instrumental in breaking
the Wildcats’ press and allowing the Knights to keep attacking.
Jared Myers now stands at
994 career points, needing six to hit the 1000 point mark.

Graham was credited with three blocked shots.
For the Wildcats, Greg
Smith turned in a double-double, scoring 22 and pulling in 13
rebounds. Lynus Ryan and Cole O’Neal each added six. Cody Farmer
scored five.
Arab moves to 12 – 11
overall and finishes 3 – 3 in the Area. Fort Payne is 7 – 9
overall and, more importantly, 4 – 1 in the Area.
Arab now prepares to face
Asbury in the Marshall County Tournament. That game is at Snead
State Community College on Monday, 1/19, at 7:45 p.m. Fort Payne
travels to Huntsville High on Tuesday, 1/20.
