When it comes to donuts, the really serious
connoisseurs of the puffy pastry have a personal strategy on how best to win a
donut eating contest. Fasting prior to the event seems to be a universal
preparation, but beyond that the rules vary. For example, some dunk the
ring shaped cake into warm water before eating, others wash it down with ice
water or milk. For Brandon Garner, winner of this year's APD Donut Eating
Contest, it was the sweet tea that made the difference, that and northing to eat
for a day prior to the contest. Garner downed five of the Papa's
Daylight Donuts in the 60 second time limit. For good measure he had
five more for "dessert" after the contest was over. Along with bragging
rights for this year, Garner received a championship trophy.
The fun event was staged to raise
money and awareness for the upcoming Relay For Life fundraiser scheduled
for April 17th. APD corporal Shane Washburn headed up the contest that was
held Saturday morning at Sierra's Mexicanissimo Restaurant. Papa's
Daylight Donuts provided the donuts.
