Workers began installing the new fencing around historic 1883 Methodist Church Cemetery located in downtown Arab on Shoal Creek Trail NE.  Arab Public Works Director Steve Hallman said that crews will install the completed sections of fencing.  Hallman said approximately $2,000 is still needed to complete the project.

When complete a total of 500 feet of fencing, a privacy wall skirting the rear of several downtown business, and a new lighted flag pole are planned for the cemetery which has been included in the Alabama Historic Commission's Alabama Register of Historic Cemeteries and is the first in Marshall County to receive the designation.

Arab city employees are constructing the fencing as the funds become available.  Hallman said the project is expected to cost approximately $15,000 which is half the cost estimates to contract the project out.

Donations from individuals, businesses, and corporations are currently being sought to raise the additional $2,000. A 4" by 6.5" plaque will be provided for each four foot section donated and will be custom engraved for each donor. A four foot section is $150 or $300 for a full eight foot section. Donations checks should be made payable to The City of Arab Historic Cemetery Project and may be mailed to: The City of Arab, 740 North Main St, Arab, AL 35016.

For more information contact Steve Hallman at (256) 586-6793 or Becky Hawkins at (256) 586-8128. Click here to print a donation form....
