A 2003 Pontiac Grand AM was totally destroyed by fire Tuesday night after the driver reported a loud pop and the car began to fill with smoke. Renee Moreland, of Parkwood Lane, Arab, was approaching the Eddy Scant City Road and Friendship Road intersection when she heard what she described as a loud pop inside the car. As she pulled up to the intersection stop sign smoke began to fill the car. Moreland and her two children evacuated the car just before it burst into flames.
As the car became totally engulfed in flames it began to roll backwards along Friendship Road and finally came to rest in a pasture. The car traveled an estimated 300 feet, leaving a trail of small fires from burning rubber and plastics that fell from the car.
The fire was extinguished by Arab Fire and Rescue, but not before the car and all contents were a total loss. No one was injured in the incident. The incident is being investigated by Alabama State Troopers. Arab Police and members of the Union Grove Volunteer Fire Department also assisted on the scene.
