The weather was beautiful, the cars were hot,
and the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life was the winner, as the second
annual Pursuit for the Cure event raised $3,769 to go to cancer research.
More than 110 racers competed in the fun event put on at the Baileyton "Good
Time" Drag Strip by the Arab and Guntersville Police Departments.
APD Corporal Mitch Stone, who
coordinated the event, was pleased with the result, "Everyone seemed to
have a good time and we raised about $1,200 more than last year for this
particular event." Stone attributed the success to the hard work of a lot
of people and to donations that covered all of the expenses. Stone said
that all of the work was done on the officer's own time and no city money was
used to promote the event.
Stone said that the racing event
is only part of the department's efforts to raise money for the cancer cause.
Members of the department have already raised money with a donut eating contest,
waiting tables, bagging groceries, and auctioning off football memorabilia.
The next event will be a "Poker Run" motorcycle event this Saturday at Big D
Motorcycles (See
