RSVP Receives Grant To Help
With Tax Preparation For Seniors
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Novewmber 17, 2009
Congressmen Robert Aderholt (AL-04) today announced that a Marshall County retirement program will receive funding from the Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
The Marshall County Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Inc, of Guntersville, will receive a grant in the amount of $25,250 to help offer free tax preparation services during the 2010 filing season.
“This funding will be used to extend tax services to seniors living in Marshall County, with the hope of increasing the capacity to file returns electronically, heighten quality control, and improve the accuracy of returns,” said Congressman Aderholt. “More than 3 million tax returns were prepared at nearly 12,000 locations around the country during the 2009 filing season for the elderly and I’m pleased that Marshall County seniors will be able to benefit from this service.”
The Internal Revenue Service has awarded nearly $8 million in grants to support the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. The VITA Program offers free tax help to low-to-moderate-income (generally, $49,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country.
VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. Most locations also offer free electronic filing.
