Snead State Community College is moving forward with plans to expand its offerings at the Arab Instructional Site.
The Alabama Board of Education’s approval of the College’s lease/purchase proposal gives Snead State an additional 24,761 square feet to accommodate growth at the site.
“The Arab Instructional Site is expected to grow due to expanded offerings, BRAC, and agreements with local high schools. The potential is there for the College to do some outstanding things to benefit Arab and the surrounding area,” said President Dr. Robert Exley.
The lease/purchase payments will total $900.000 to be paid over a 12 ½ year period. The College has the option to purchase the property at any time prior to the expiration of the lease. Currently, the College leases 8,000 square feet of the current property for $2,000 per month.
Plans for the site include the installation of a CISCO training lab, nursing facilities and faculty offices. General Education course offerings will be increased, and the Workforce Development Program will grow at Arab, thanks to the expansion.
Director of Community Education Teresa Walker said the site will begin offering AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign for Windows. A new Office Administration Career Track will also be available through the Workforce Development program, thanks to a stimulus grant.
“We are getting a state-of-the-art computer lab to use in teaching the OAD classes,” said Ms. Walker. “The skills students learn through this program enable them to work in a variety of settings, providing them with more employment options.”
Starting in December, students can pursue the 10-week OAD program which trains them for entry-level administrative and bookkeeping office positions. Classes will be offered at the Arab site on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during daytime hours. Evening course offerings are forthcoming as well.
Students who successfully complete the program will have a background in such areas as Microsoft Office 2007, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, bookkeeping/accounting fundamentals and principles, QuickBooks accounting software, and customer service relation skills. Students will also receive training in resume development, interview techniques, and job searches.
