The Arab Lady Knights took second place in the finals of the Marshall County Tennis Tournament on Friday. The Knights fell to Guntersville but are now looking ahead to the Sectional Tournament play w weeks from now.
AHS girls tennis coach Alana Burks said "This year I have seen more strong play and overall improvement in Marshall County tennis as a whole than ever before. Our girls were having to play strong all day. Guntersville is always tough, and they made every final in singles and doubles. Our girls were pushed, and I liked what I saw with sectionals two weeks away. We had five girls to make the finals: Abby Burks at one, Caleigh Poole at four, Mary Paige Hunt at five, Emma Walker at six, and Ashley Vickers (along with Poole) at two doubles. Caleigh Poole won the championship at the #4 singles."
Individual Results:
Singles:
1. Abby Burks defeated Albertville 10-5 and lost to Guntersville in the final 5-10.
2. Ashley Vickers lost to Boaz in the semifinals 5-10.
3. Carley Hallman lost to Douglas in the semifinals 4-10.
4. Caleigh Poole defeated Boaz 10-1 and Guntersville 10-6 in the final.
5. Mary Paige Hunt defeated DAR 10-6 and lost to Gintersville 6-10 in the final.
6. Emma Walker defeated Albertville 10-2 and lost to Guntersville 3-10 in the
final.
Doubles:
1. Burks/Hallman lost to Boaz 9-11 in the semifinals.
2. Vickers/Poole defeated DAR 10-4 and lost to Gintersville 4-10 in the finals.
3. Hunt/Mary Ellen Hill lost to Albertville 4-10 in the semifinals.
"We were without #5 singles/#1 doubles player Lindsey Elrod at the tournament. She was on the band Washington DC trip. Mary Paige Hunt subbed in at the #5 singles and had a tremendous tournament in that seed. In her singles final, she was really close to pulling it out. The #1 singles final between Abby Burks and Autrey Bradley of Guntersville was a slug-fest. It was one of the best matches I have seen all year. I wish we would of had a speed-gun on both sides of the net to clock their pace on serve and strokes. Autrey signed with Snead State this week to play tennis. She is a tremendous player and we wish her luck. Caleigh Poole was a trooper and really took control of her seed. She dominated and really stepped up."
The last sectional match of the year for the Lady Knights will be Thursday at Fort Payne. The sectional tournament for the girls is Thursday April 22 at the Point Mallard tennis center.
