Jack and Martha Hamilton thought they were going to the Arab Chamber of Commerce annual meeting to watch their grandson receive an award for a letter that he had written --- to their surprise the letter was about them and they were receiving the award.
Jack and Martha Hamilton began their business careers in Arab by opening and M & J Supermarket. They later added a second store in Blountsville. In the early 1980w they purchased what was then called Arab Cash & Carry from their good friend Arlon Wheeler. They change the name to Arab Lumber & Supply and have remained in the same location on Brindlle Mountain Parkway for the past 20 years.
Circle of Excellence Business Award
Arab Lumber & Supply
Each year the Arab Chamber of Commerce recognizes a business in our community. The award is presented to a business that has demonstrated outstanding leadership in all aspects of their business and personal lives.
After hearing about this award, I felt that there was no one more deserving than my grandparents, Jack and Martha Hamilton, so I nominated their business. Tonight it is my great honor to present the 2010 Circle of Excellence Business Award to Arab Lumber and Supply.
Webster’s Dictionary defines an entrepreneur as “One who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise.”
Being in business can be risky, but my grandparents have been doing it successfully for more than 40 years. Jack and Martha Hamilton moved to Arab, AL in 1964 with their three children, Doug, Beth and my daddy, Tommy. At the time, Jack was a salesman for Scotch Lumber Company.
Our family has been in the logging business for many years. My great grandfather, M.C. Hamilton, Sr. worked in the logging industry in the 1940s in Sweet Water, Alabama and later moved to Fulton, Alabama to work for Scotch Lumber Company. Jack and his brothers grew up in the logging business, so it makes sense that my grandfather would one day own and operate a lumber company.
After moving to Arab, they opened M&J Supermarket and expanded the business, adding a second store in Blountsville.
Then in the early 1980s, Jack and Martha Hamilton purchased Arab Cash and Carry from their good friend, Arlon Wheeler. At the time, my grandmother was president of the Arab Chamber of Commerce. She resigned her position to work alongside my grandfather.
They changed the name of the business to Arab Lumber and Supply and have remained in the same location, on Hwy 231 for more than 20 years. Daddy Jack does the wheeling and dealing and Granny Ham keeps him straight. She handles the books, taxes and maintains the office. Together they have built a successful business of which they can be proud.
Arab Lumber and Supply is a business that believes in supporting its community. Over the years the business has offered support for Arab sports programs, the Arab Band and Arab Musical Theater, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Rotary and Civitan clubs, as well as the Mothers Clubs and VFW.
My grandparents have a passion for Mission work and have traveled to Guatemala, Brazil, Spain and Indonesia to help others. They are active in their church outreach and visitation program and have a desire to share their love for church and God with others.
I nominated Arab Lumber and Supply for the Circle of Excellence Business Award because not only have my grandparents been hard working business owners in Arab for more than 40 years, they strive for excellence in business and in their personal lives.
They have always instilled in me that in business, church, family, or your community, much can be accomplished through hard, honest work. Granny Ham and Daddy Jack are true entrepreneurs and I am proud to present the 2010 Circle of Excellence Business Award to Arab Lumber and Supply, owned and operated by my grandparents Jack and Martha Hamilton.
