A suspicious blaze destroyed an unoccupied house on Fry Gap Road Tuesday morning. The fire, which was reported around 5:30 a.m., is the third suspicious blaze in the area in a little more than three weeks. Flames were already breaking through the roof when the fire was discovered and called into Marshall County 911. The structure was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters could arrive on the scene.
Firefighters responding to the fire reported finding an open door that appeared to have had some type of forced entry. An owner of the house said the door was normally secured. Although the house had not been occupied since the previous owners passed away, it was stilled connected to electricity and was being maintained by the couple's children.
Arab Firefighters actively fought the blaze for about two hours and then remained on the scene to prevent the fire from rekindling for several more hours. Fire units were recalled to the scene later in the day to extinguish and area that rekindled.
A home on Brashier's Chapel Road was heavily damaged by fire on January 3rd. One of the homeowners told firefighters that someone threw some type of incendiary device through a window causing the blaze. A second fire on January 11 destroyed the C & V Quick Mart located at the intersection of Fry Gap and Brashier's Chapel Roads. Both fire remain under investigation.
No one was injured in the fire. Fry Gap Road was shut down for approximately two hours due to the fire hoses that stretched from a hydrant across the road and from emergency vehicles. Arab Police assisted with traffic and scene control. A unit from the 4-C Volunteer Fire Department assisted with mop up operations and with extinguishing areas that rekindled after the fire was brought under control. The cause fire is being investigated by Arab Fire and Rescue.
