February 18, 2010 A faulty furnace blower motor is thought to be the cause of a fire that did major damage to a Fry Gap Road home on Wednesday. Arab Fire Chief Ricky Phillips said the fire had gotten into the attic by the time fire units arrived on the scene. Firefighters were able to knock the fire down before it ventilated through the rood, but not before causing major structural damage.
The home belongs to Thomas White of 1408 Fry Gap Road. No one was injured during the fire. Firefighters received the call to the blaze at 1:01 pm and remained on the scene for approximately 3 hours.
Firefighters from the Mount Hebron and Georgia Mountain volunteer fire departments were attending training classes at the Arab Fie Department when the fire call came in. Phillips told the students that they were about to go on an unscheduled field trip. Personnel from those departments, as well as 4-C Volunteer Fire Department assisted in fighting the blaze. Arab Police and the American Red Cross also responded to the scene to assist.
