$100,000 Grant For Marshall County
Youth Homeless Shelter

Shelter will serve youth from North Alabama, including Etowah, Marshall, Cullman & DeKalb Counties

WASHINGTON, D.C. – October 4, 2010
Congressman Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) today announced that the Tennessee Valley Family Services Agency, in Guntersville, has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Street Outreach Program to expand their outreach in north Alabama. The Street Outreach Program mission is to help runaway and homeless youth.

“The Tennessee Valley Family Services is a great organization that does an incredible job reaching out to and serving troubled youth who come from all over north Alabama,” said Congressman Aderholt. “This grant will help them meet the needs of many young people who are facing troubling situations. Congratulations to Alice Henderson and her staff for successfully competing for this grant.”

“The agency is so grateful to the Department of Health & Human Services and Rep. Aderholt to be able to expand our services to these youth who are struggling with their most basic need - survival,” said Tennessee Valley Family Services Executive Director Alice Henderson. “Street youth are at a greater risk of exploitation, drug use, crime victimization, prostitution and suicide. This program is our opportunity to change and save lives in Huntsville and Madison County. As we like to say 'street life is not an option!”

Tennessee Valley Family Services is a nonprofit organization designed to address the immediate needs of runaway, abused and homeless youth, as well as children in need of supervision. Young people from all over north Alabama have been served and mentored at the Tennessee Valley Family Services shelter in Guntersville, and the group will now expand their outreach to a new drop-in center in Huntsville.

The Administration for Children and Families Street Outreach Program, within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is responsible for federal programs that promote the economic and social well-being of families, children, individuals, and communities.
