Katlyn Stricklend Selected For
National Youth Program

January 28, 2010
Miss Katlyn Stricklend, daughter of Billy and Kaye Stricklend, has been selected to participate in the Leadership Through Learning Youth Program hosted by the Foundation for Rural Education and Development (FRED). She is one of 12 special high school juniors and seniors from across America who will travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in the week-long program sponsored by NECA and The Berry Company. Students who participate in the program receive a scholarship worth approximately $2,000 that covers all costs of their transportation, lodging, meals and activities.

Katlyn was required to submit an application and was chosen on the strengths of her essay, academic achievement, letters of nomination, plus community and school involvement. All students selected to participate in the program are from rural areas and were nominated by local telephone companies, like Otelco Telephone Company, who is a member of the Organization for the Promotion and Advancement of Small Telecommunications Companies (OPASTCO), a national trade association located in Washington, D.C.

During April 11 to 16, 2010, Katlyn will travel to Washington, D.C., where she will visit monuments, memorials and museums as well as learn about national landmarks and the events or people they honor. Students will also visit various Washington, D.C., neighborhoods and attend daily workshops, debates and lectures on current topics that include international relations, politics, the media, the judiciary system and lobbying. A highlight of the week will include a visit to Capitol Hill where students will have an opportunity to meet their congressional representatives. The FRED students are part of a larger group hosted by the Close Up Foundation, which provides lodging and logistic services.

"I am honored to have been selected to attend the 2010 Leadership Through Learning Youth Program. This is a very prestigious program and I want to thank the faculty of Arab High School, my family, Otelco, and the community for helping me earn such an honor."
