People's Bank Robbed
By Knife Wielding Thief
August 24, 2010
A knife wielding robber is still on the loose after robbing a local branch of People's Bank around 10:25 a.m. Tuesday morning. Arab Police, FBI agents, and various north Alabama law enforcement agencies are on the lookout for the masked bandit who may also be responsible for other similar robberies in the area.
The masked robber walked into the bank, located at 910 North Brindlee Mountain Parkway, and demanded money while brandishing a knife at a bank employee. He fled the bank after taking an undetermined amount of money from the teller. No one was injured during the robbery.
Police say the robbery suspect fled into the wooded area immediately behind the bank where he shed the clothing worn during the robbery. Officers searching the woods found the clothing during their search.
Immediately after the robbery, Arab Police, assisted by several other north Alabama law enforcement agencies converged on the area with officers, canine units, and a helicopter. An extensive search turned up the discarded clothing but no suspect. Police believe the robber escaped in a waiting car, possibly driven by an accomplice.
APD Chief Mike Blackwood said the robber's actions were similar to other bank robberies that have occurred in surrounding communities in recent months. Blackwood urged anyone with information about the robbery to contact the Arab Police Department.
In operation since 1979, People's Bank is headquartered in Cullman and operates branches in 6 North Central Alabama counties.
