Sheriff Walls Warns
About New Phone Scam

March 8, 2010
Sheriff Scott Walls of the Marshall Co. Sheriff’s Office wants to alert area citizens of a telephone scam that is being circulated throughout the area. An unknown caller is making telephone solicitations, claiming to be “raising money to buy bulletproof vests for the Sheriff’s Department.”

In a statement, Walls said the only organizations currently authorized to solicit funds for the Sheriff’s Office are the Alabama Sheriff’s Association, and a representative soliciting advertising for the upcoming gospel singing fundraiser, the proceeds of which will go toward providing toys for needy Marshall County children.

If a representative contacts you on behalf of either of these fundraisers, that representative will have a letter from either the Alabama Sheriff’s Association or from Sheriff Walls himself, identifying the person handling the solicitation, and the cause for which it is intended.

If you are contacted by someone claiming to be soliciting money on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office, please get all the information you can from them, (a location, mailing address, phone number, etc.) and contact the Sheriff’s Office at (256) 582-2034.

If you are contacted by someone and want to determine the legitimacy of their call, call the Sheriff’s Office and their staff will be glad to try to verify the identity of the person soliciting money.
