First proposed by Sterling Morton in 1872, Arbor Day has become a national event that promotes the planting of trees and the City of Arab participates inthe annual event by setting aside a special day each year to promote tree planting. Arab Mayor Gary Beam recently proclaimed March 10 as the official date for the Arab. In keeping with tradition, the Arab Beautification Board planted two magnolia trees at the Arab Historic Village complex.

Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agricutlure that a special day be set aside each year for the planting of trees. Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska and is now observed throughout the nation and the world.

Trees help to reduce erosion of topsoil by wind and water, help cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and provide a habitat for wildlife.

Beam urged all Arab citizens to celebrate the event by supporting efforts to protect trees and woodlands and to plant trees to promote the well being of future generations.
