September 19, 2011
A report of a "man with a gun" at 3292 Swearengin Road near Grant ended with the suspect being shot by a Marshall County deputy after authorities say the man pointed the gun at the deputy.
In a press release issued just after 8 pm Monday night, Marshall County Sheriff Scott Walls said Grant Police and Marshall County deputies were called to the Swearengin Road residence around 4:57 pm.
Walls said that upon arrival, the initial responding deputy, gathered information on the situation from the reporting party and moments later encountered a man with a shotgun on the back porch of the residence. According to Walls, the deputy gave repetitive verbal commands to drop the weapon; the man did not and advanced toward the deputy while raising and pointing the firearm at the deputy. At that time, the deputy discharged his weapon striking the man.
The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to an area hospital for treatment. According to Walls, the injury was not life threatening. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation.
