Kerosene Leak Pours Into Clemons Creek

September 7, 2011
Emergency Personnel from Arab Fire & Rescue, Marshall County Emergency Management Agency and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management worked throughout the afternoon on Tuesday to contain a kerosene leak from an underground storage tank at the Eastside Texaco on Guntersville Road. A report to Arab Fire & Rescue of a strong odor of fuel in the area of Colonial Drive and Arad Thompson Road prompted a response by the fire department, who located a substantial amount of product in a flowing creek (Clemons Creek) reaching from Fairview Drive to Colonial Drive, under Arad Thompson Road through the neighborhood on 12th Street and 12th Way NE to Victoria Lane. Responders placed absorbent booms across the creek at several points along the creek to collect the fuel and stop it from flowing further downstream.

Emergency Officials and representatives from ADEM met with personnel from Campbell & Son’s Oil Company from Huntsville, who are the owners of the fuel tanks at the Texaco, late Tuesday afternoon to make arrangements for the clean-up and disposal of the fuel. A contract disposal company has been hired by the oil company and are expected to begin efforts to clean up the spill on Wednesday.

Representatives from ADEM are monitoring the area and overseeing the cleanup efforts. Once the water table drops efforts to make repairs to the leaking tank will be attempted. As of Wednesday morning all the fuel had been removed from the tank, eliminating the fuel source. Efforts now are focused on cleaning up the area and restoring the effected property to its original state. It is reported that there was approximately 600 gallons of kerosene in the tank at the beginning of the business day on Tuesday.
