Fire damaged the home of Kurt Lantz Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters were called to the home located at 1171 Monetro Road NW around 12:44 pm. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the structure but a quick response by the firefighters extinguished the blaze and helped to limit the damage.
On arrival, Mrs. Lantz reported that everyone was out of the house except for a family pet. Firefighters entered the home in search of the fire, finding that the fire appeared to have started in the basement and spread through the floor in a bedroom and eventually making its way into the attic. Once the source of the fire was located, it was quickly extinguished.
The family pet was rescued from the home, was administered oxygen and medical treatment on the scene before being transported to a local veterinarian for evaluation. Last report was the pet is doing well but will be kept overnight for observation.
Water was supplied to the trucks from a hydrant just over 1000 feet away on Monetro Road. Ten personnel from Arab Fire & Rescue responded with a total of three Engines. Assisting at the incident were members of Arab Rescue Squad, Arab Police Department, Samaritan EMS and Arab Electric Co-Op.
Arab Fire Chief Ricky Phillips said the fire appeared to have started near the heating & air conditioning unit in the basement. Phillips said the exact cause has yet to be determined but appears to be accidental and weather cannot be ruled out. There were severe storms in the area around the time of the fire. The home was insured.
Phillips said, “The quick, professional actions of all the agencies involved contributed to the successful outcome of this situation. Damage to the home was minimized by tactics used to fight the fire, confining it to the area of the home it originated. The firefighters on the scene are to be commended for the outstanding job they did under some very difficult and dangerous conditions.”
