Anne of Avonlea Drama Presented By
Covenant Christian Academy Drama Class

March 28, 2006 - By: Gayla Hayes
The Drama Class of Covenant Christian Academy performed Anne of Avonlea on March 9th and 10th at Hillwood Baptist Church in Huntsville. Anne of Avonlea was written by L. M. Montgomery and is the sequel to the popular Anne of Green Gables. It is the story of Anne Shirley, played by Andrea Wilhelm, after she has grown up and become a teacher at the Avonlea School on Prince Edward Island, Canada. She is now applying to Redmond College and has to write an essay of her life. During the play she looks back on her life as an orphan and being adopted by Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. We see her friends in Avonlea and the love she has for the people in the village and especially her beloved Green Gables. Many characters such as Marilla Cuthbert, Rachel Lynde, Diana Barry and Gilbert Blythe are familiar to those who have read Anne of Green Gables. Other characters are new to this story. Anne has a lively class of students including accident prone Barbara Shaw, played by Leilani Hayes of Arab. Another new character is Mr. Harrison who owns a talkative parrot named Ginger. The voice of Ginger is Brendon Young, also of Arab. Brendon is also the voice of the echo at Echo Lodge and one of the students in Anne’s class. Other CCA students in the drama class who have Arab ties are Noah and Naomi Shell. The play was delightful and the students did a wonderful job of bringing this classic story to life under the excellent direction of Mrs. Heather Biard.

Covenant Christian Academy drama class is made up of forty homeschool students ranging from seventh through twelfth grades. They meet once a week in Huntsville for their classes and rehearsals with Mrs. Biard. The class began rehearsing in January and was ready for their open dress rehearsal on March 7th. It will be exciting to see what play they present for us next year.
