Democrats Field Seven Candidates
For Local 08 Races
April 7, 2008
Eight Marshall County Democrats have
qualified for seven of the eight races in
the upcoming local elections. Only one race
with two qualifying Democrats will result in
the need for any local Primary Election
campaigning. The other six Democratic
candidates will not face any challenge until
the General Election in November.
“Once again, I am impressed by the caliber
of our Democratic candidates”, said Party
Chairwoman Susan McKenney, as she waited for
any last minute candidates just before the 5
o’clock deadline for qualifying on Friday
evening in the lobby of Probate Judge Tim
Mitchell’s office at the Guntersville
Courthouse.
“The Democratic Party has a long and proud
history of representing and protecting the
interests of working Americans. We are
committed to ending the Republican culture
of corruption and restoring the public
trust. We our very proud of our winning
ticket,” she said with confidence.
Lynn Walls for Revenue Commissioner
McKenney said this about Walls, “Lynn Walls
is, by far, the most impressive candidate
for the office. Over the past 22 years she
has worked her way from Clerk, Level I in
the tax assessor’s office to the highest
position of Chief Clerk, a responsibility
she has held for 12 years, the past six
years in the revenue commissioner’s office.
There’s not a single individual with more
knowledge of the overall workings of the
office”. Walls, 44, lives near Arab and is
the wife of Marshall County Sheriff Scott
Walls. She will face her boss, Joey Masters,
in the November election.
R.E. Martin for Commissioner District 2
“District 2 Commissioner R.E. Martin brings
experience and proven performance to his
race, making him unbeatable”, McKenney
stated. A lifelong Grant resident, the
popular Martin, 70, is vying for his fourth
term on the Marshall County Commission. He
is vice chairman of the Commission and can
take pride in his many accomplishments
serving the citizens of Marshall County.
With no same-party opponent, Martin will not
be on the primary ballot. The Republicans
have fielded three District 2 candidates who
will face off in the June 3 election to
determine who will challenge Martin in
November.
Danny Pankey for Commissioner District 3
“Danny Pankey will be an outstanding
addition to the Marshall County Commission.
He is well respected and demonstrated
exceptional leadership skills when he served
as president of the Cattleman’s
Association”, said McKenney. Pankey, 60, a
life-long Marshall County resident, works
for AT&T as an outside plant technician. He
is the only Democrat running for the
position and will face the winner of the
three-way Republican race for the position
on the November ballot.
Democrats also fielded candidates for three
Constable positions. Mark Bollinger
qualified for Beat 1, Tommy Cole qualified
for Beat 4 and Brent Rhodes for Beat 20.
Each are unopposed in both the Primary and
General Election.
Marshall County Democratic voters will also
find several district and statewide races on
the ballot. In the upcoming Primary contest,
Steve Dodd and Clyde Jones are vying for the
party’s nomination for Court of Criminal
Appeals, Place 1; Jeff Duffey, Jon Hayden
and Aimee Cobb Smith are seeking the nod for
Court of Criminal Appeals, Place 2; Greg
Warren and Nicholas B. Sparks are running
for U.S. House of Representatives; and
Vivian Davis Figures, Johnny Swanson III and
Mark “No NCAA” Townsend have qualified for
U.S. Senator.
Former Lt. Governor Lucy Baxley is running
for Public Service Commission President
unopposed in the Primary.
