Rhonda Osborne Achieves Certification in Hospice and Palliative Care Administration

Rhonda Osborne

Rhonda Osborne, CEO of Hospice of Marshall County (HMC), has recently achieved certification in Hospice and Palliative Care Administration through the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses (NBCHPN). This certification requires the ability to manage the proper allocation of available resources to assure quality outcomes, job satisfaction and professional development. As a CHPCA, Osborne has demonstrated a leadership role in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating the organization’s activities, and uses a comprehensive approach in the management and coordination of the interdisciplinary team to provide efficient and effective hospice and palliative care across the spectrum of health care settings.

Upon achievement of this award, she became the only hospice administrator in the state of Alabama to successfully validate her expertise through this certification. According to the Hospice Foundation of America, there are more than 4700 hospice programs in the United States. Out of those hospice organizations nation-wide, there are only 91 hospice administrators certified through the NBCHPN.

Osborne has served as President of the Alabama Hospice Organization (AHO) since 2009. Previous to her tenure as president, she served on the AHO State Board of Directors, participating as chairperson of the Bylaws Committee, chairperson of the AHO Education Committee, the 1996 State Conference Committee, Registration Chairperson for the 1997 State Conference, Palliative Care Task Force, and most recent years on the Executive Committee. She developed the 1994 Directory of AHO Hospice Providers for the State of Alabama. She has represented Alabama hospices in Washington, DC, while meeting with various Alabama legislators on Capitol Hill regarding Medicare legislation affecting hospice care.

Osborne is also active in the Hospice Alliance of Alabama. She has served as vice-president and president, on the standards Committee and currently serves on the Board of Directors. She is a member of the Council of Hospice Professionals and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association, having published an article in the national newsletter in regard to study groups for rural hospice nurses preparing for the Hospice Nurses Certification Exam.

Osborne began her employment with HMC 20 years ago as a staff nurse and has served as CEO since 1995. Under her leadership, Hospice of Marshall County has grown to include the first inpatient hospice facility in North Alabama.
