NEW HOURS RSVP TAX SITE

February 23, 2012
For those of you who have waited to do your taxes until the right moment, now is the time. RSVP will prepare your federal and state returns and e-file them all for free.

From now until April 13 the Albertville RSVP tax site at the Albertville Rec Center will have new hours. They will be open Monday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Starting March 13, the Guntersville Tax site at the Guntersville Rec Center will have new hours. They will be open Tuesdays from 9am – Noon and Thursdays from Noon to 3pm.

Marshall County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program will have IRS trained volunteers at the following locations in the county to prepare returns and file returns electronically. This is a free service to taxpayers of all ages sponsored in part by United Way of Marshall County and will be offered through April 15th with no appointment necessary:

Albertville Rec Center – Monday and Friday from 10am - 2pm

Arab Rec Center - Tuesday from 1 – 6pm and Wednesday from 9am – 1pm

Boaz Old Water Board - Monday and Tuesday from 9am - 3pm

Guntersville Rec Center - Tuesday and Thursday from 10am - 4pm, until March 16, then Tuesdays

from 9am – Noon and Thursdays from Noon to 3pm

Scottsboro Rec Com – Tuesday from 10am – 5pm

Bring your last year's returns, social security cards for all family members, photo ID, all W-2's and 1099's and any other tax information. All individual returns are welcome – itemize, investments, self-employment, tips, social security. All tax preparation is strictly confidential.

The IRS and the Alabama Department of Revenue are encouraging all taxpayers to file electronically. You can file federal and state income taxes electronically for free through all of the sites listed above. When you come into the site, one of the assistors will help you to file an electronic return. With a joint return, both spouses must sign the return before it can be processed. If you owe money, electronic filing allows you to file your return the day it is prepared and you can wait until any time before April 15th to send in the money you owe. If you are receiving a refund, it can be processed more quickly by having the funds directly deposited into your bank account or into multiple accounts, such as checking, savings and retirement savings accounts.

If you have a tax question that can be answered by telephone, assistors will be available to help you three Mondays in February (6th, 13th, (Monday 20th is a holiday), 27th) from 10am-Noon at 256-571-7734.

This tax program, a volunteer income tax assistance program sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service, RSVP and United Way, offers special assistance to those with special needs, including older taxpayers, shut-ins and persons with disabilities. By calling 256-571-7734 to make an appointment, a tax assistor will help you with your tax return at any of the Senior Centers or Nursing Homes in Marshall County.

Forty-six RSVP volunteers have completed an IRS training course in basic income tax preparation for Federal Form 1040 and Alabama forms, including accompanying Schedules A, B, C-EZ, D, EIC, SE and numerous Forms. These trained volunteers can alert taxpayers to special credits and deductions for which they may be eligible, such as Earned Income Credit, child tax, child care, education, medical savings, and tax credit for the elderly.

Sites are all walk-in, first come, first served, no appointment. All tax preparation is done in strict confidence.

  • ·        It’s quick. The average time is estimated to be 30 minutes.  Refund in less than two weeks.
  • ·        It’s easy. Returns are written in a user-friendly, simple question & answer format.
  • ·        One-stop. You can do your state and federal returns all in the same visit on-line.
  • ·        It’s free. You will have brand name software available for your use at no cost.

Who is eligible? FAST is open only to taxpayers 52 years of age or less with household income of $53,000 or less,  OR taxpayers any age with household income of $31,000 or less,     must have an email address.
