RSVP Book Club
Announces Upcoming Selections
January 7, 2010
The RSVP Book Club has selected books for reading and discussion through June of this year and invite readers throughout the county to join them. There is no charge to belong to the club, although each club member must purchase or borrow the selected book to read.
The Book Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month, except December, at 1:00 at the RSVP Center, located behind Mike’s Merchandise in Guntersville. Moderator of the group is Angela Otts. Sessions last 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Call RSVP at 571-7734 to register.
Book selections for each month include:
Jan. 26 – “Redneck Riviera” by Birmingham native Dennis Covington, author of “Salvation on Sand Mountain” and winner of the 1995 National Book Award. Covington tells about seeking his inheritance, a worthless piece of land in Florida. It’s a story of land development, greed, good ole boy/redneck intimidation and inept and corrupt Southern politics.
Feb. 3 - “High Adventure” by Advertiser-Gleam editor/publisher Sam Harvey. Mr. Harvey will be a guest at the discussion of his book, which tells the story of his family and the newspaper his father founded. Books will be available for sale at RSVP and the Advertiser-Gleam.
March 23 – “A Full Grown Man” by Athens author Bill Hunt. Mr. Hunt will be a guest at the discussion of his book, being held in the audio-visual room of the Guntersville Library. His appearance is a joint project of RSVP and Guntersville Library. There is no charge for the program. His book, which is set in Louisiana, is the story of a young man falling in love with an older woman and his controlling mother taking away her son’s future. The book will be available for sale at RSVP and the library.
April 27 – Read any book by author Susan Wittig Albert. Her books include “Wormwood,” the China Bayles series, Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter series, “Together, Alone’ and others.
May 25 – “1984” by George Orwell. Published in 1950, “1984” describes one man’s struggle against menacing state power of “Big Brother.”
June 22 – “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett. This best-seller debut novel is set during the civil rights movement in Jackson, Mississippi, where black women were trusted to raise white children but not to polish the household silver.
