RSVP OCTOBER OPPORTUNITIES
RSVP will be offering the following learning opportunities during October. To register for a class come by RSVP. Some class sizes are limited so signup as soon as possible. For more information call RSVP, 256-571-7734.
• Beginning Dulcimer: Due to overwhelming response from Melodies and Musings, Pat Jex will teach a 5-week class, Tuesdays at 9am starting Oct. 4. If you have ever wanted to learn now is your opportunity. We have a limited number of mountain dulcimers to loan students for the 5-week class or bring your own. Each student will need a dulcimer, a music stand, tuner and the willingness to learn. $40, includes beginner book.
• Living with Hearing Loss: Dr. Nancy Mascia, AL Dept of Rehab Services, will talk about adjusting to loss of hearing for seniors and their spouses. She will demonstrate assistive aids for your home to help cope with hearing loss. Oct. 7, 10am, $5
• Jewelry Design with Arlene – Tennis Bracelet: All beads, tools and materials furnished. No close-up work involved. Tennis bracelet using Swarovski crystals and lead-free pewter beads. Class requires a very limited use of small seed beads. 2 Tuesdays, Oct. 11 & 18, 9-Noon, Cost $30.
• Old Medicine Drug Roundup: October 21st 9-Noon, To help keep pharmaceuticals out of our local ground water don’t flush them or put them in the trash. RSVP with the help of Drug Enforcement Unit, and local law enforcement will again sponsor a “roundup” of old medicines - prescription and over-the-counter. Clean out your medicine cabinets and bring everything except pre-filled syringes, in the original container to one of the following locations: Albertville Rec Center, Arab Rec Center, Boaz Old Sr. Center and Guntersville Rec Center. Meds will be sent off to be incinerated in an environmentally safe manner. Your Participation Can Make A Difference!
• Introduction to Writing: Want to write to tell your story, to make money or for enjoyment? Want to write articles, novels, children’s books? Find out about the different types of writing. Learn why you want to write and what you want to write about. Tom Ault will teach the ropes of submission for publishing. Four Mondays starting October 24 at 2pm. Optional: Individuals can submit samples of their work for feedback. Cost $20
• Book Club would like for you to join them on the 4th Tuesday of the month 1pm. Each member is responsible for getting and reading the book selection. Angela Otts moderator. October 25th selection is: "The Kitchen House", Kathleen Grisson.
• Halloween Bat Campfire Program: October 28, 10am at RSVP (Modified for senior adults) Just in time for Halloween, Patti Donnelan, State Park Naturalist, will present a slide show featuring anything you ever wanted to know about bats, the only mammals naturally capable of true and sustained flight. Bats maintain our natural world by hunting insects, pollinating plants and scattering seeds. And they are in danger. The United Nations has proclaimed 2011-2012 “The International Year of the Bat”.
After your indoor campfire lecture and folklore stories, wander out under our big orange awning to a real campfire to roast a hot dog for lunch and finish off a Halloween some-more (S’more). Cost $10, includes program and camp food and drink.
Computer classes with books have an additional fee. At the end of class, books may be kept or returned for refund if not marked up. All computer classes require a Flash Drive, 1 Gigabyte minimum.
• Intro to Power Point: 3 Wednesdays from 1-3:30pm, starting October 5, $15. Learn to use Microsoft PowerPoint presentation graphics software to create effective presentations from the beginning to the end. Master the skills necessary to plan and develop exciting presentations. Book $25 available.
• Genealogy: 4 Fridays from 9:30-11:30am, starting Oct 7, $20. Students will learn how to use the Ancestry.com on-line research site. The Family Tree Maker program is available on all computers for genealogy documentation. The first part of each class will be instruction and the last part will be doing actual research. Students need to bring family information they want to research. A basic knowledge of genealogy is required.
• Other Operating Systems: 3 Tuesdays from 9 -11:30am, starting October 11, $15.
• Power Point Special: Oct 26, 1-3:30pm, $5. Add pizazz to your productions.
