RSVP Announces April Classes

Registration is now being taken for 6 learning opportunities scheduled for April at Marshall County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), located behind Mike’s Merchandise in Guntersville.

Classes are open to seniors 55 years and older, either free of charge or for a nominal fee. Classes with a fee must be paid for before the class starts. .

April educational classes include:

  • Elderly Scam Awareness: Tues., April 8, 10:00-11:30. Free program but must register. Heath Thomas, Public Information Officer for the Marshall County Sheriff’s Dept. will illustrate how the simplest of scams over the phone or through the mail can fool even the most diligent seniors.
     
  • Pet First Aid: Thurs., April 10, 10:00-noon. $5 class fee plus $13 Pet First-Aid Book. Veterinarian Dr. Ellen Trapp gives you measures you can take when your cat or dog has an emergency injury or incident that doesn’t required a vet’s care or until you can get the animal to a vet.
     
  • Southern Garden and Container Plantings: Mon., April 14. 10:00-noon. $5 Horticulturist Cindee Maltbie shares ideas of matching up plants for interesting and ever-blooming beds and planters, especially plants ideally suited for the Southern climate.
     
  • Beginning Tennis: 3 consecutive day sessions. Mon., April 14; Tues., April 15 and Wed., April 16, 9:00-10:00. $15. Rec Center tennis courts. Limited to 6 seniors or retirees. Jay Allen will cover the basics of tennis equipment, grips, strokes, serving and the rules of the game. Bring tennis racket and water, wear tennis shoes and a hat. Balls will be furnished along with a ball machine for practice.
     
  • RSVP Forum Series: Southern Humorist and Author Georgia Richardson. Wed., April 16, 1:00-3:00 Free program but must register. Author and motivational speaker share stories about how her life of writing took off once she learned to reinvent herself after tragedy. She promises to give tips on writing, editing and publishing for novice writers as well as share humorous antidotes about her books and internet column. Her books will be available for sale and autographing.
     
  • Drivers’ Safety Course: 2-day session, Thurs., April 17 and Fri., April 18. 8:30-12:30 in RSVP meeting room. AARP certified instructors Billie Ellen and Dewon Simpson. Must attend both days to receive certificate to qualify for possible insurance discounts. No tests or driving. $10 fee, payable on first day of class, but call to register.
