"Seven Wonders Of Marshall County" Finalists Chosen

April 7, 2008
Fifteen finalists have been chosen for RSVP’s Seven Wonders of Marshall County, 2 of which are in the Arab area. Residents of the county will be able to vote for their favorite “wonders” at festivals, club meetings and business locations from now until the end of July.

Both natural and man-made “wonders” were nominated for the honor. Area judges whittled the list down from an initial list of nearly 50 sites to15, which represent a cross-section of the county’s best loved places.

The Arab area finalist sites are the Arab Historic Park Complex and Thompson Falls.

Other sites in the county include:

Guntersville: Guntersville State Park (lodge, overlook, hiking trails), Lake Guntersville, Old Rock School/Whole Backstage.

Union Grove: Guntersville Dam

Five Points: Eagles Nesting at Town Creek

Grant: Cathedral Caverns, DAR Campus (old gym, administration building, overlook)

Honeycomb: Natural Bridge/Ghost Creek Falls, Bat Cave on Tennessee River.

Albertville: Pre-Civil War Cemetery in Albertville, Albertville Depot

Boaz: Snead College Historic District/Museum, Julia Street Memorial United Methodist Church.

RSVP has created a traveling photo display of these 15 finalists which will be available at a number of community events in coming months. Residents vote by donating a quarter or more to the RSVP Building Fund. RSVP purchased land on Hwy. 431 No. at Claysville for their new training and educational center in November.

The winning Seven Wonders of Marshall County will be announced at an old-fashioned ice cream social the last week of July.

Events where voting for the Seven Wonders will take place are: Art on the Lake-Guntersville, April 19-20; Poke Salat Festival-Arab, May 3-4; Ladies Civitan Club-Guntersville, May 7; Altrusa Club-Boaz, May 13; Senior Health and Fitness Day-Guntersville, May 29; Will Rogers Festival-Guntersville, June 6-7; Guntersville Civitan Club, June 10; Parker Law Office-Grant, June 16-20; Dennis Foodland-Grant; June 21 and other locations and businesses to be announced.

RSVP Public Relations Coordinator Angela Otts will speaking to a number of civic clubs about the history of the 15 finalists. If any club would like to have the display and a talk at their meeting, email her at angela@mcrsvp.org or call 571-7734 to reserve a date.
